What's stamped concrete?

Stamped concrete is a decorative form of concrete work. It can resemble various material installations such as brick, flagstone, slate and wood to achieve the desired pattern. It is more expensive than regular concrete, as it is more labor intensive but worth every dollar.

The process involves placing concrete without a broom finish and applying a release agent before stamping the concrete with rubber mats. This release agent is either a clear liquid release or a antique release powder that is placed on the concrete to either give the concrete the main color or secondary color.

F.A.Q. about Stamped Concrete

  • How much more expensive is stamped concrete compared to regular concrete?

Stamped Concrete tends to be 1.4 times more expensive than getting regular concrete installed. For example, if you received a quote to get a patio done for $5,000, getting it done in stamped concrete would cost about $7,000. But a lot of other factors affect the price too such as more site preparation before the concrete gets poured, darker and lighter concrete color choices, more designs or phases, ETC.

  • Why is stamped concrete more expensive?

Stamped concrete is more expensive as it requires more work than regular concrete. There are more steps, and more materials needed when it comes to getting stamped concrete installed.

  • Is stamped concrete slippery?

No. Stamped concrete can only become slippery when wet if traction-grit additive was not added into the sealer when applied. We mix in a traction-grit additive into the sealer before the sealer gets applied onto the concrete's surface for every stamped concrete project to make sure of no slip and falls but also preserve the life of the concrete by having sealer applied.

What designs can I choose?

Whats a release agent?

A release agent is a powder or liquid that gets applied to the concrete so the rubber mats, that are used to make the designs, don't get stuck onto the concrete.

Coloring and Stamping

Changing the concrete's color comes to down 3 ways.

 1. The FIRST way is mixing bagged cement pigment into a concrete truck.  Which is also known as integral colored concrete. Integral color isn't only used for stamped projects, it can also be used for regular broom finished concrete. Usually when going with this option for your stamped project, your two options of release agents would be a clear liquid release agent or a powdered antique release. The powdered antique release adds a secondary color to the concrete. If you need help with choosing coloring for your concrete, we can help.

 2. The SECOND way is by using a color hardener. It's a powder that consists of pigments, sand and fine aggregates. The color hardener gets applied onto concrete when bull floating to manually work the color into the concrete. When choosing color hardener for your project, the way to stamp it would be with an antique release agent. You can get more color variations on your patio with this option by mixing the two powders onto your concrete. One for coloring and one for stamping.

 3. The THIRD way would be staining the concrete. The concrete gets stained with an acid or water-based formula. Which is then sprayed, rolled or a combination of both onto the concrete. When choosing this option you would get your stamped concrete project installed in regular grey colored and stamped with a clear liquid release agent. Then the concrete would get stained once dry. This option creates more color variation by pairing multiple stains together or to create one more uniform color.
